This mural was painted onto a large canvas of approximately 4m x 2m. This design is based on a Viking theme, with the aim of creating a historically correct depiction of the Viking era through the mural.
Due to its theme, we knew the portrait of the Viking would benefit from having a dirtier, rugged appearance to help provide an insight into the Vikings of the Middle ages. Few Viking longships have been recovered, though historians believe the colour of the sails on these ships may have been red and white, representing the colours of blood and bone. These flags were a terrifying sight for the villages that were raided. The dragon, or snake head, which were commonly sculpted onto the front of these Viking longships served a similar purpose.
